Commercial photo companies are not trusty stewards. If you’re going to make things public domain accessible, you need to have a trusty steward. If anything, the Flickr experience has taught me this: I had already decided not to join a site like 500PX or unSplash. Now, it was time to see if I could recreate the same functionality elsewhere. These were all features that had drawn me to Flickr. I wanted to not only be able to share a photo title, but also potentially a description and additional tagging. While I plan to continue to add to MorgueFile, a Google or Bing search is going to expose these photos to a broader audience. My 2000 Flickr images were full size and comprised about 4 GB over 10 years but I’m adding more quickly in recent years.
And if I did, I could increment up my space costs. I have plenty of space with them for storage, so, unlike Flickr, I wouldn’t find myself hitting a hard cap. I figured they could handle high levels of traffic and I’m already using the two services. I spent some time looking at alternatives and I’ve decided to roll my own image site using Piwigo, a really nice open source app. The recent changes at Flickr will make it more commercially viable but they create a change for individuals who want to make photos freely available.
